Cosmic Slumber Tarot – a Review

Special and Standard Edition Tarot from Liminal11

The Cosmic Slumber Tarot is a new deck by artist Tillie Walden, released by Liminal 11, the same company that produced the Modern Witch Tarot. The art is a gorgeously colored take on the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, with far more charm, whimsy, and inclusiveness. While you can purchase a Standard Edition deck, I received the Limited Edition – a treasure as there are only 1,111 packages available (as of today, only 844 remaining).

First, the mailing package is prettier than any I’ve ever seen. Opening it was almost like unwrapping a Christmas present. And, once opened, instead of a rectangular box, Liminal11 packaged the deck in a round lilac-colored tin. Inside is a triptych (three panel illuminated window), a velvet bag, reading cloth, sketch book, and a hardcover little white book. And that doesn’t even include the deck.

With silver gilding edges, the deck’s coloration borders on what I would term bold pastels. Imagine amped-up versions of turquoise, pinks, lilacs, and yellows. Card backs have a geometric design in orange and yellow, with a subdued violet frame. The cards shuffle easily and glide together a little like butter (!). For some this might not be important, but as someone who shuffled cards more than 50 times on Halloween night doing Spirit messages, the ease of shuffling is important to me.

What About the Cards?

In terms of the cards, themselves, they’re charming in a fantasy-world kind of way. I’m particularly fond of two of the Major Arcana – the Hermit and the Hierophant. (It may be because they are my birth pairs!). I think you can tell just from these two cards why I said the coloration was a bold pastel.

For me, the youthfulness of the Hierophant makes him so much more approachable. The scene looks a lot like a group of pre-teens getting together to learn how to do something super cool. As for the Hermit, I love that a Saturn-like planet is included as Saturn really is the taskmaster. Being a Hermit is a tough challenge. However, she has the gift of a cat – a message telling us that the way through hard times is by using our intuition.

The Minor Arcana are mostly illustrated, although there are a couple that are more like non-illustrated pips. I’m thinking of the 7 of Cups, that shows seven cups along with a young man who appears to be diving for treasure (the cups). Due to the underwater muted tones, the gold cups really stand out, while the man almost becomes part of the background.

Included in the deck are two bonus cards: The Night and The Morning; the Night offers a place of safety and reflection, the Morning a chance for a fresh start. Both cards fit well into the deck, as there is always a place for those two messages.

Suits are Torches (Wands), Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Tarot’s Page and Knights become Princess and Prince, while the Queen and King remain unchanged.

I used this deck in my Seasonal Tarot Spread in the last newsletter and it read like a dream. (If you’re not on my newsletter list, use this link to get a free subscription.)
